Artist in Residence: Djofray Makumbu

Artist in Residence: Djofray Makumbu

From 4th to 30th October Guest Projects Digital is revealing intimate insights into the process and layered multidisciplinary practice of British Congolese artist Djofray Makumbu on its website and social media channels. Presenting a unique window into the two-month residency programme that Makumbu has been completing as part of the annual Guest Projects Digital programme, it offers an opportunity to get to know the artist like never before.

Spontaneous moments such as Instagram live sessions showing Makumbu working in his studio across mediums including painting, animation and audio are underpinned by exclusive screenings and time-lapse videos spotlighting key elements of his animation process.

The highlight is a specially commissioned film in which Makumbu traces his journey as an artist. The conversation begins with a frank reflection of the challenges he faced in education as a result of his dyslexia and the hurdles he overcome to graduate from Goldsmiths University. It moves on to discuss some of the new projects he’s been developing as part of the Guest Projects Digital residency before culminating with a look ahead at future collaborations with Black Art Matters and his November premiere screening of the film Hello Mr Officer at South London Gallery. This is the first film of this kind to be made about the artist.
